Squarespace, Wix, or a custom website: when to make the jump

Website builders are the right call when you’re starting out. Here’s how to tell when you’ve outgrown one — and when a custom site actually pays for itself.

Squarespace and Wix are genuinely good products, and we’ll tell you plainly: if you’re just getting started and need a clean site up this week, use one. A builder is the right tool for a real stage of a business. The mistake isn’t starting on a builder — it’s staying on one long after it’s started holding you back. Here’s how to tell which side of that line you’re on.

When a builder is the right call

If your site is essentially a brochure — who you are, what you do, how to reach you — and traffic is modest, a builder does that job well and cheaply. There’s no prize for building custom before you need to. Stay until the platform starts costing you more than it saves.

The signs you’ve outgrown it

  • You’re paying for three plugins and still can’t build the one thing you actually need
  • The site feels generic, and so does every competitor on the same template
  • It’s slow, and you’ve run out of knobs to make it faster
  • You’ve hit a wall on SEO — you can’t control the markup, speed, or structure that rankings depend on
  • You need it to *do* something — bookings, a store, logins, a back office — and the builder can only fake it

What custom actually changes

A custom site removes the ceiling. It’s as fast as it can be because nothing’s on the page that doesn’t need to be. It looks like your business and no one else’s. And it can grow in any direction — the day you need a store or a customer portal, you’re not migrating platforms, you’re extending the one you own. We wrote more about that trade-off in why we build custom instead of from templates.

It’s really a build-vs-buy decision

Underneath, this is the same build-vs-buy question every growing business faces: rent something standard, or own something built for you. Rent while the standard thing fits. Build when your website stops being a brochure and starts being the front door to how your business actually runs.
